When the Light Returns

“Spring drew on...and a greenness grew over those brown beds, which, freshening daily, suggested the thought that Hope traversed them at night, and left each morning brighter traces of her steps.”
- Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

Seasonal Shifts: Noticing the Change

There’s a quiet shift happening at home.

The light is changing again - softer in the mornings, stretching further into the evenings and with it comes that familiar urge to open things up a little.
Windows cracked open, surfaces cleared, a different energy beginning to emerge

It’s not a full reset - just a sense that things want to move.

Spring in Nature: A Season of Balance and Renewal

This time of year has always marked a turning point.

The spring equinox, when day and night briefly sit in balance, signals the shift into longer, lighter days and the steady return of growth.

Long before Easter became what we recognise today, this moment in the season was acknowledged through celebrations like Ostara. Marking the arrival of spring not just symbolically, but in response to what was visibly changing - longer days, softer ground, the first signs of new life returning.

Many of the familiar symbols we still associate with Easter - eggs, hares, spring flowers - stem from this. Simple reflections of renewal, and the quiet re-emergence of life after winter

Why We Start to Make Space

And often, we have that sense of re-emergence too.

Not as a need to overhaul everything, but as a readiness to make space - a sense that we’re ready to shake off what’s carried us through winter. To clear what’s been cocooning us and allow something lighter to take its place.

Physically and metaphorically we’re ready to take off the heavier, comforting layers that suited the winter months. Now there’s a natural desire to pare back, to breathe new life into our homes, make space. To let things feel lighter again.

Small Shifts for a Spring Ready Home

Often, it’s the smallest changes that make the biggest difference - subtle adjustments that shift how a space feels without needing to rethink it entirely.

  • Clearing a single surface that’s become cluttered. So good for our mood and mental clarity

  • Swapping in a small jug of fresh stems. Bringing the visible signs of new life into your home

  • Moving a cherished picture so it catches the light differently.

These are just a few small changes that let a room breathe again - I’ll be delving further into this later in the month.

This season isn’t asking for perfection and instant transformation, just the space for the things we nurtured over winter to finally begin to emerge.

Where to begin

A small intentional change can be enough to welcome in what feels ready to emerge - both in your home and in the pace of everyday life

If you feel that pull to refresh a corner or rework a space, follow it in a way that feels easy.
Start small and let it unfold in its own time.

Often, it’s the simplest updates - a new piece on the wall, a subtle introduction of spring’s more uplifting colours that change how a room feels.

Not a transformation, just a soft recalibration.
One that brings a sense of calm, and a closer connection to the season as it unfolds around you.
